How This India-born Engineer Made Canada His Permanent Home

We are Path to Canada. We help immigrants find and access work opportunities in Canada.

Today, we share the inspiring journey of Sudeep Datta, an immigrant who navigated multiple challenges and found a new home in Canada.

What will this journey look like for you?

Sudeep Datta’s story started when he graduated with an Electronics and Electrical Engineering degree from his hometown, Kolkata’s Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, in 2009.

After graduation, Sudeep started in IT security and worked his way to financial security product development, taking roles in Mumbai, Perth, and Kuala Lumpur. In Malaysia, he led legacy system migrations for Allianz Insurance.

But he wasn’t done moving. Sudeep’s passion for analytics led him to pursue a master’s degree in Data Analytics from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, where his wife, another Indian citizen, was working for Deloitte. After graduation, he found work in Boca Raton as a Data Engineer.

Throughout these years, Sudeep and his wife envisioned settling down, but the stability they craved was lacking in the U.S. There had to be another option.

Opting out of the U.S. Immigration system

While Sudeep and his wife originally wanted to settle in the U.S., the complexities of the H-1B lottery system and green card backlogs created significant uncertainty.

Sudeep’s wife secured an H-1B visa, but travel restrictions and the lengthy immigration process made it hard to make long-term plans. These challenges became more pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting them to reevaluate their goals.

Canada’s points-based immigration system offered clarity and a viable path to permanent residency, aligning with their aspirations for stability and long-term prospects for their growing family.

Path to Canada and Syndesus: Key Partners in the Transition

With these challenges, Sudeep reached out to Path to Canada and learned about Syndesus, a company that facilitates transitions for skilled workers to Canada while maintaining employment with their current U.S.-based employer.

The process began in earnest after a detailed consultation with Jennifer at Syndesus. Syndesus coordinated with Sudeep’s employer to manage documentation and legal paperwork, ensuring a smooth transition.

By December 2021, Sudeep’s work permit was approved, and he and his wife moved to Canada in April 2022.

A seamless tradition to a new home

Upon arriving in Canada, Syndesus continued to support Sudeep and his wife. The HR team connected Sudeep with a real estate agent, facilitated rental arrangements, and provided resources like a grocery voucher to help them in the chaotic first few weeks.

Syndesus also helped set up essentials, including social insurance numbers, health cards, and bank accounts.

Keeping his U.S.-based job with Syndesus

Thanks to Syndesus, Sudeep maintained his role with the same employer while resolving immigration challenges. His expertise in setting up analytics systems and generating actionable insights for decision-making allowed him to work effectively in a remote setup.

Sudeep’s contributions, such as boosting customer growth and optimizing marketing revenue, reinforced trust with his employer and highlighted the practicality of Syndesus’ model for cross-border employment.

Overcoming visa challenges as they came

While the immigration journey was smooth compared to the U.S., there were still some bumps with contract preparation and paperwork delays.

Syndesus’ responsiveness and efficiency resolved these challenges quickly. Sudeep emphasized how critical the professionalism of both Syndesus and his employer was in making the transition successful. The seamless coordination allowed him to focus on his work and family during the move.

Enjoying the high quality of Canadian life

Since moving to Canada, Sudeep and his family have been able to settle down as they first dreamed of. Within six months, he and his wife received Canadian permanent residency. They also welcomed their first child in November 2022.

Access to Canada’s healthcare system and the supportive community enhanced their overall quality of life.

Professionally, Sudeep transitioned to a new role at ServiceNow in Toronto, continuing to advance his career in data science and analytics.

Adjusting to a new personal and professional life

Sudeep’s journey was about career growth and creating a stable environment for his family. The move allowed him and his wife to grow their family while enjoying the benefits of a welcoming community and robust social systems.

“Planning and preparing for life in Canada helped us adjust quickly,” Sudeep shared. This proactive approach ensured a balance between professional commitments and personal milestones.

Advice for others considering the move to Canada

For those navigating U.S. immigration challenges, Sudeep strongly recommends considering Canada as an alternative. The transparent points-based system, combined with the support of programs like Path to Canada and Syndesus, makes the transition manageable.

His advice includes conducting thorough research, choosing trusted organizations, and preparing early with the support of a cooperative employer.

Gratitude for Path to Canada and Syndesus

Reflecting on his journey, Sudeep expressed gratitude for the professionalism and efficiency of Path to Canada and Syndesus. From managing documentation to post-arrival support, the process was seamless. Sudeep has since participated in community calls to share his experience and guide others who are considering this path.
